Turkish bread recipe

Ingredients:

  • 500g all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet dry yeast (7g or 2 tsp)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 250ml warm water
  • 100ml milk
  • 1 tbsp yogurt (optional, for extra softness)
  • 1 egg yolk (for brushing)
  • Sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a bowl, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
    • In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture, olive oil, and milk.
    • Mix until a dough forms. If the dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour. If it’s too dry, add a little water.
  2. Knead the Dough:
    • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  3. Shape the Bread:
    • Preheat your oven to 220°C (430°F).
    • Punch down the dough and divide it into 2-3 equal portions, depending on how big you want the loaves.
    • Roll each portion into a flat circle or oval shape, about 1 cm thick.
    • Place the shaped dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Topping & Baking:
    • Brush the top of each flatbread with a little egg yolk (you can mix it with a bit of water for a smoother consistency).
    • Optionally, sprinkle sesame seeds or nigella seeds on top for extra flavor and crunch.
    • Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown with crispy edges.
  5. Serve:
    • Let the bread cool for a few minutes, then slice and serve. It’s perfect with dips, salads, or as a side with Turkish dishes like kebabs or stews.

Enjoy your homemade Turkish flatbread!
